After Roe: The Constitution, Rights, Policy and Politics

After Roe: The Constitution, Rights, Policy and Politics

In the aftermath of the US Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the issue of abortion has become a main focus of Michigan politics and nationally.

As voters in Michigan face a decision on a constitutional amendment on the issue, and as the issue plays out in statewide and state legislative races, the Center for Civic Engagement is pleased to bring you

After Roe: The Constitution, Rights, Policy and Politics
                                                     October 11, 2022
                                                           7-8:30 pm
                                                       Virtual via Zoom

We will host two nationally renowned speakers for a Lincoln-Douglas debate, a format that allows two speakers with differing views on a topic point and counterpoint opportunities with an emphasis on logic, ethical values and philosophy.

Jill Filipovic is a CNN columnist, former contributing opinion writer to The New York Times, former columnist for The Guardian, and author The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness.

Alexandra DeSanctis is a staff writer for National Review, visiting fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and co-author of Tearing Us Apart: How Abortion Harms Everything and Solves Nothing.

Our goal is not to change anyone’s mind about the issue, but, rather, to offer and supply information. This event can also help to improve discourse. This is on two fronts. First, we know that when people who disagree know and understand why someone else believes what they do, they are more likely to respect and tolerate that opinion. Second, with the participants we have invited, this will be a model of civil behavior and tone, even on this most-contentious issue.
